Why a Solar Water Heater?
What is Solar Water Heating?
A Solar water heater is a solar PV system that provides electricity harnessed from the sun and uses it to heat the water and possibly the central heating in your home.
Because this technology uses a clean source of energy, switching over to a solar water heater will lead to a reduction in your domestic carbon footprint and also your utility bills.
It will also significantly reduce your monthly energy bills as these systems can produce up to one third of your household’s warm water.

Benefits of Solar Water Heating
The use of solar powered hot water in your household has many benefits.
Firstly, solar hot water heaters can supply hot water all year round. This can lead to a drastic reduction in your utility bills as they can provide up to a third of your hot water needs.
When compared with other renewable energy solutions, solar water heaters have a much lower maintenance costs and have very high levels of durability.
This is usually reflected in the 5–10-year warranties that come as standard with these products.
Solar Water Heating Savings and costs
The costs of installing a solar water heating system have reduced by around 25% in the last 5 years.
On average for a family of 4 a solar water heater can cost between £3,500 – £4,400 but this can increase to around £5,800 depending on the system required.
The solar industry recommend you have at least 1m2 of panel installed per person living in the premises.
|Size of Panels Installed||Number of People in House||Average Cost of Installation|
|2m2||2||£2,300 – £2,950|
|3m2||3||£3,000 – £3,550|
|4m2||4||£3,650 – £4,250|
|5m2||5||£4,300 – £4,900|
|6m2||6||£4,950 – £5,650|
Grants Available for Solar Water Heating
Currently the UK Government are offering 2 different kinds of incentives. These are the Green Homes Grant and the Renewable Heat Incentive.
The Green Homes Grant
The Government has introduced the Green Homes Grant to help households that want to reduce their carbon footprint but that can not afford the upfront costs of installing solar panels.
The Government has addressed this by introducing the Green Homes Grant Scheme which will give UK homeowners up to £5,000 towards the cost of installing a solar water heater system.
Renewable Heat Incentive
In addition to the Green Homes Grant the government is offering the Renewable Heat Incentive. If your solar water heater is installed properly, you can earn money back from the system.
For every unit of energy your system produces you are rewarded financially based on the governments current tariff.
These payments are made to you on a quarterly basis for a period of 7 years.
Tips to help you decide which Solar Panel System is best for you
When choosing your Solar Water Heater system, you should consider a cleaning and maintenance guide in order to optimise your purchase.
- Firstly, it is advised that you get an Energy Performance Survey to check your getting the most from your energy system. If you are not you need to correct this before you install a solar water heating system.
- You will need to have enough south-facing roof space. You will need approximately one square meter of roof space per person living in the property. This will heat up between 25 and 60 litres of water.
- If it is not possible to use a south-facing roof space, you might consider buying a thermodynamic panel which can be placed on any side of the house.
